Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala on Saturday to address the security situation in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring peace, stability, and security across the continent.
In a statement shared by the Somali presidency, both leaders welcomed the launch of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which replaced the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The mission, authorized by the UN Security Council, aims to assist Somalia in combating al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups.
Mohamud and Museveni urged the international community to provide consistent and sustainable funding for the mission.
They also highlighted the importance of supporting Somalia’s security forces to ensure the country can eventually take full responsibility for its security.
The leaders stressed the need for a successful implementation of the Somali Security Development Plan, which is vital for the nation’s long-term stability.
Both leaders agreed that AUSSOM’s eventual withdrawal should occur smoothly, with Somalia fully capable of handling its own security.
