Mozambique has officially declared an end to its years-long insurgency after capturing the last remaining rebel training camps in Cabo Delgado.
Chief of Defense Intelligence Ricardo Macuvele announced the development Thursday during an official visit to Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.
Macuvele credited the success to the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique, whose troops played a decisive role in the operation.
He emphasized Zambia’s significant support in the effort, praising the neighboring country’s contribution to restoring security in key areas.
“The territory you helped us recover from the terrorists—we still hold it,” Macuvele told Zambian officials, highlighting the enduring success of joint military operations.
The statement was issued by Zambia’s Ministry of Defense following Macuvele’s meeting with Permanent Secretary for Defense Maambo Haamaundu.
Haamaundu affirmed Zambia’s ongoing commitment to regional peace, standing in solidarity with Mozambique in the fight against terrorism.
He added that Zambia remains dedicated to combating transnational threats, including terrorism and human trafficking, in coordination with regional allies.
Mozambique’s northern region of Cabo Delgado has endured brutal attacks by insurgents since 2017, leading to thousands of deaths and displacements.
The conflict, driven by militant extremism and resource competition, has tested the region’s stability and prompted international concern.
Now, with rebel camps dismantled and territory secured, officials say the country is ready to turn a new page toward peace and reconstruction.
