Niger’s former Prime Minister Hama Amadou has died at the age of 74 in Niamey.
His death follows years of medical issues, though the exact cause was not disclosed.
Amadou served as prime minister twice, from 1995 to 1996 and from 1999 to 2007, and was the speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2014.
He also ran for president in 2011, 2016, and 2020 but was unsuccessful each time.
As the leader of the Nigerien Democratic Movement for an African Federation, which he founded in 2009.
Amadou was a fierce rival of former presidents Mahamadou Issoufou and Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown in a coup in 2023.
Throughout his political career, Amadou faced multiple imprisonments, including accusations of embezzlement and involvement in an illegal infant trafficking network, charges he claimed were politically motivated.
Despite these challenges, he remained a significant figure in Nigerien politics until his death.
