Nigeria, India to boost maritime and security ties

Nigeria and India have agreed to enhance cooperation in maritime security, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism measures, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Nigeria—the first by an Indian leader in 17 years following an invitation from President Bola Tinubu.

Arriving in Abuja on Saturday evening, Modi met with Tinubu at the presidential villa on Sunday. Their discussions covered economic development, defense, healthcare, and food security, according to a joint statement.

Amid rising security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea and the Indian Ocean, both nations pledged coordinated efforts to protect vital maritime trade routes and tackle piracy.

Nigeria, aiming to attract greater Indian investment and secure affordable credit, looks to strengthen its economy and boost job creation. Last year, Nigeria reported securing $14 billion in investment commitments from Indian firms during the G20 summit, including a $3 billion investment from Jindal Steel and Power in the Nigerian steel industry.

Over 200 Indian companies are already active in Nigeria. Following his visit, Modi is scheduled to attend the G20 summit in Brazil.
