Nigerian airstrike kills 100 civilians in Zamfara market attack

A Nigerian military airstrike has reportedly killed about 100 civilians at a market in Zamfara state, Amnesty International says on Monday.

The rights group said military jets struck the market in Tumfa on Sunday in Zamfara state, northern Nigeria region.

A Red Cross official, Ibrahim Bello Garba, confirmed the strike to The Associated Press and reported multiple civilian deaths.

The incident adds to concerns over repeated accidental airstrikes amid Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram and other armed groups.

Nigeria’s military confirmed conducting an airstrike but said no verifiable evidence of civilian casualties had been established yet as reported in media.

Amnesty International described the strike as deadly and called for urgent investigation into possible violations of international humanitarian law standards.

Zamfara state remains a hotspot of insecurity where armed groups frequently clash with security forces and civilians suffer heavily affected.

According to The Associated Press officials continue to assess the aftermath as communities search for victims in Tumfa market area.
