At least 10 people have died and seven others were injured in a building collapse in Nigeria’s southwestern city of Ibadan, officials said on Thursday.
The two-story private residence collapsed in the Ona Ara area of Ibadan, Nigeria’s third-largest city and capital of Oyo State, according to Akinyemi Akinyinka, head of the State Fire Services.
“The Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distressed call this morning… 10 victims have been recovered from the debris, while seven persons were rescued alive,” Akinyinka told reporters.
The injured were taken to local hospitals, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing, Akinyinka added.
Residents reported hearing loud noises and cries for help as the building fell, shocking the neighborhood.
Building collapses are frequent in Nigeria, often attributed to poor construction standards, weak safety regulations, and inadequate maintenance.
