Nigeria’s Tinubu reshuffles cabinet, fires five ministers

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has fired five ministers and appointed seven new ones, according to a statement from his office on Wednesday.

The reshuffle aims to improve the administration’s efficiency amid growing economic challenges and public dissatisfaction in Africa’s most populous nation.

New appointments include ministers for humanitarian and poverty reduction, trade and investment, labor, and livestock development, along with junior ministers for foreign affairs, education, and housing.

Those dismissed include the ministers for education, tourism, women’s affairs, youth development, and the junior housing minister.

Tinubu’s reforms, initiated after taking office last year, aimed to reduce government spending and attract foreign investments. However, inflation has surged to a 28-year high, and the national currency, the naira, has reached record lows.

Mass protests have erupted over the rising cost of living, with demonstrators demanding better jobs and opportunities, especially for the youth.
