Protesters injured as Nigerian police halt rally against Senate president

Protesters gathered outside the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, demanding an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Led by women’s rights activists, demonstrators held signs reading “Respect Women’s Rights” and “No to Sexual Harassment,” calling for Akpabio’s resignation.

Police fired teargas to disperse the crowd, leaving several protesters injured and in need of medical attention.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of inappropriate advances during a December 2023 visit, later filing a $67 million lawsuit against him.

This isn’t the first allegation against Akpabio, as a former official accused him of harassment in 2020.

Public outrage is mounting, with calls for accountability, while the National Assembly remains silent on the controversy.Protesters injured as police block rally against Senate president
