Rwanda declares end to Marburg virus outbreak

Rwanda has officially declared the end of its Marburg virus outbreak after 42 days without new cases, Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana announced during a Friday press conference.

The outbreak, which began in mid-September, marked Rwanda’s first experience with the deadly viral hemorrhagic fever. A total of 66 confirmed cases were reported, including 15 deaths and 51 recoveries, according to the health ministry.

“It has been a long journey, but today we can announce the end of the Marburg outbreak in Rwanda, in line with World Health Organization guidelines,” Nsanzimana stated.

The declaration followed the recovery and discharge of the last patient over six weeks ago. “At midnight last night, we officially reached the 42-day threshold, marking the end of this outbreak in Rwanda,” he added.
