The Pastef party, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has secured a commanding majority in Senegal’s legislative elections, winning 130 out of 165 seats, according to provisional results reported by state TV on Thursday.
Faye, who took office in April following a decisive electoral victory, dissolved the parliament on September 12, just two years into its term. He cited difficulties in collaborating with an opposition-dominated assembly that repeatedly blocked executive proposals.
With this majority, Faye is now positioned to advance his ambitious reform agenda, a cornerstone of his presidential campaign. His immediate focus will be addressing the country’s fiscal crisis as he prepares the upcoming national budget.
