Severe weather forces Morocco schools to suspend classes

Schools across northern Morocco were closed on Monday as heavy storms swept through the region, prompting safety concerns.

The Moroccan Education Ministry suspended classes in public and private institutions following a severe weather alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology.

The Regional Directorate of National Education in Tangier urged students, teachers, and staff to take necessary precautions.

Abdelmalek Essaadi University in Tetouan also halted classes for the day, announcing plans to resume normal schedules on Tuesday.

The General Directorate of Meteorology had warned on Sunday of heavy thunderstorms beginning Monday, forecasting rainfall between 60 and 90 millimeters (2.3 to 3.5 inches) in Tangier, Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Larache, and Al-Hoceima.

Additional cities, including M’diq, Ouazzane, Taza, and Taounate, are also expected to experience significant rainfall.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay alert as the storms persist.
