South Africa makes AI for sustainable development a G20 priority

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Thursday that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a key priority during the country’s G20 presidency.

Speaking at the Microsoft South Africa Investment Announcement, Ramaphosa highlighted the launch of the National AI Skilling Initiative, aimed at training public servants in AI. He emphasized the initiative’s role in equipping government employees with essential skills for the digital age.

South Africa is finalizing a cybersecurity bill to secure online government services and protect digital transactions. The government is also working on a National AI Policy designed to position the country as a leader in AI innovation while addressing broader challenges.

Ramaphosa praised Microsoft’s commitment to train one million South Africans in AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity by 2026. He described the company’s continued investment since 1992 as a “vote of confidence” in the South African economy.

Highlighting AI’s transformative potential, he underscored the need for skilled talent and the technology’s role in job creation. He reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to ensuring technological advancements drive Africa’s growth, industrialization, and progress.

“We have high expectations that our G20 presidency will yield tangible outcomes, expanding the global digital economy and leveling the AI playing field for all,” Ramaphosa stated.
