Swiss aid workers killed in DRC attack

Three local employees of Swiss Church Aid were killed in an attack while on a humanitarian mission in eastern Congo, the organization said.

The tragic incident occurred Wednesday in Rutshuru Territory, about 50 kilometers north of Goma, where M23 rebels have been gaining ground.

Swiss Church Aid, also known as HEKS/EPER, provides crucial assistance to victims of armed conflicts in the region.

The aid group did not identify those responsible for the attack but announced the creation of a task force to investigate.

As a precaution, the organization has suspended all humanitarian operations in the area until further notice, the statement confirmed.

Eastern Congo has long been plagued by violence, with armed groups vying for control over land and resources in the volatile region.

The deaths of these aid workers highlight the dangers faced by humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones.

Despite international efforts to stabilize the region, the security situation remains dire, with frequent clashes displacing thousands.

The attack adds to growing concerns over the safety of aid workers, who risk their lives to provide essential support.
