Tunisia coastguard recovers 16 migrant nodies

Tunisia’s coastguard has recovered the bodies of 16 migrants off the shores of Maloulech, Salakta, and Chebba, the national guard announced Monday. The tragedy marks another deadly incident in the Mediterranean as migration attempts continue to surge.

“The bodies, discovered over the weekend and on Monday, could not be identified due to decomposition,” said Houssem Eddine Jebabli, a senior national guard official.

In a similar incident last month, at least 15 Tunisians, including three infants, lost their lives, and 10 others remain missing after their boat capsized off Djerba. Additionally, the bodies of 13 sub-Saharan migrants were also found in nearby waters last month.

As Tunisia faces an unprecedented migration crisis, it has now overtaken Libya as the primary departure point for both Tunisians and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempting to reach Europe.
