Tunisia starts gradual evacuation of irregular migrant camps in Sfax

Tunisian authorities have initiated the evacuation of camps sheltering thousands of irregular migrants in the southern province of Sfax.

The operation commenced Thursday in the Al-Aamra and Jebeniana areas, targeting the largest camp housing approximately 4,000 individuals.

National Guard spokesperson Houssam Eddine Jebabli confirmed the migrants are primarily from sub-Saharan Africa.

The evacuation is proceeding peacefully, involving the Tunisian Red Crescent, Health Ministry, and Civil Protection agency.

These entities are providing necessary aid to the migrants during the process.

Authorities stated the operation will continue incrementally until all camps are dismantled “as soon as possible.”

Estimates suggest around 20,000 irregular migrants reside in the Al-Aamra and Jebeniana areas alone.

While the exact relocation sites remain undisclosed by Tunisian authorities, media reports indicate migrants will be transferred to various shelter centers across the country.

This temporary arrangement will facilitate their voluntary return to their respective home nations.

President Kais Saied recently called upon international organizations to bolster efforts supporting voluntary returns and combating human trafficking.

In 2024, Tunisia reported facilitating the voluntary return of 7,250 irregular migrants in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration and neighboring countries.

Facing economic and political challenges, Tunisia has become a significant transit point for irregular migration towards Europe. Tunisian authorities routinely announce the interception of attempted crossings.
