Dozens of people were reportedly killed in two suspected attacks by armed gangs in northeast Nigeria.
Taraba state governor Agbu Kefas reported “scores” of deaths and property loss in Karim Lamido district early Saturday.
While the governor didn’t specify a number, locals in Munga and Magani villages estimated nearly 30 fatalities.
A Magani resident, Moses Kefas, recounted hearing midnight gunshots and later finding 16 bodies.
Andrew John from Munga reported seeing about 13 dead bodies in his village.
Governor Kefas strongly condemned the “horrendous and unacceptable” violence.
The district has recently faced attacks by these armed gangs, locally known as bandits.
These gangs typically raid villages, killing, abducting for ransom, and looting and burning houses, particularly in Nigeria’s northwest.
These killings are the latest in a surge of deadly violence in northeast Nigeria, where jihadist attacks have also intensified in recent weeks.
