WHO declares Egypt malaria-free after centuries

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that Egypt is now certified malaria-free.

This certification marks the elimination of malaria, a disease that had existed in Egypt since ancient times.

According to the WHO, the certification process requires countries to demonstrate the interruption of indigenous malaria transmission.

This interruption must be proven to have lasted for at least three consecutive years.

The transmission is primarily caused by Anopheles mosquitoes, which spread the malaria parasite among humans.

Globally, the WHO has granted malaria-free status to 44 countries and one territory.

The WHO stated this in an official statement, highlighting the progress in global malaria elimination efforts.
