Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit South Africa on April 10 for talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ramaphosa’s spokesman said Friday, as Kyiv seeks to bolster international support after the U.S. halted military aid.
South Africa, a BRICS member with close ties to Russia, has maintained a non-aligned stance on the war, abstaining from U.N. votes and avoiding direct condemnation of Moscow’s invasion.
“The visit continues President Ramaphosa’s engagements with both President Putin and President Zelenskiy on a peace process for Ukraine,” spokesman Vincent Magwenya told Reuters.
The U.S. previously accused South Africa of supplying arms to Russia, though an inquiry found no evidence.
Zelenskiy’s trip comes as European leaders pledge greater defense spending following Washington’s decision to cut military aid to Kyiv.
