Zimbabwe university staff protest for higher pay

Over 100 lecturers picketed at Zimbabwe’s main university, backing a five-week wage strike that cancelled exams.

Lecturers downed tools demanding a salary increase to $2,500, their 2018 level before currency devaluation.

Students joined the protest, the third since the indefinite strike began.

Classes are suspended, and exams were missed two weeks ago, according to the AUT.

The administration’s suspension of union leaders has reportedly fueled the strike.

The AUT warns the university could close for the first time since 1952 if demands aren’t met.

Only a small fraction of the 1,200 teaching staff are currently working.

Six students were arrested earlier for supporting the striking teachers.

Students recognize lecturers as crucial and their mistreatment hinders education.

Lecturers demand $2,500 monthly, comparable to regional institutions.

The university reportedly plans to replace striking staff with temporary hires.
