Algeria turns to international market for wheat

Algeria’s state grains agency, OAIC, has successfully acquired at least 480,000 metric tons of milling wheat.

This purchase was confirmed through assessments from European traders following an international tender on Thursday.

The initial reports indicate that the wheat was procured at approximately $263 per ton, including freight costs.

Traders suggest that some estimates of the total purchase volume may reach up to 500,000 tons.

A large portion of this wheat is expected to be sourced from the Black Sea region.

Traders noted that countries like Bulgaria, Romania, and the Baltic states will likely contribute to this supply.

Further assessments from traders indicate that additional estimates regarding prices and volumes may emerge later.

The wheat is scheduled for shipment during two periods this year, from Dec. 1-15 and Dec. 16-31.

In a previous tender reported on Oct. 8, Algeria purchased between 510,000 to 570,000 tons at around $262.50 per ton.

Notably, Algeria had excluded French companies from participating in that tender due to heightened diplomatic tensions with France.

On Wednesday, traders reported that French companies were invited to the latest tender.

However, they could only offer wheat of non-French origin, highlighting ongoing diplomatic sensitivities.
