Senegal, Mauritania start of gas production at GTA project

The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project, a joint venture between BP and its partners, has achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of first gas production from an offshore field shared by Senegal and Mauritania.

The announcement was made jointly by the energy ministries of both countries.

GTA, a pioneering floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility strategically positioned on the maritime border, is poised to produce 2.3 million tonnes of LNG annually in its initial phase.

“The successful opening of the first well marks a pivotal moment, paving the way for the imminent commencement of gas commercialization,” the ministries declared in a collective statement released on Tuesday.

BP and Kosmo Energy, a publicly traded US-based energy company, are spearheading the development of GTA, which represents a landmark achievement for Senegal as the nation’s inaugural LNG project.
