South Africa’s MTN unveils budget-friendly 5G smartphone

MTN South Africa has unveiled the MTN Icon 5G, a budget-friendly smartphone aimed at expanding access to high-speed mobile internet.

Priced at 2,499 rand ($138) or 219 rand per month on a 36-month contract, the device is among the most affordable 5G smartphones in the market.

Manufactured by Chinese handset maker ZTE, the MTN Icon 5G offers fast data speeds, lower latency, and improved user experiences, MTN said in a statement on Tuesday.

The launch aligns with MTN’s mission to reduce the digital divide in South Africa, where affordability remains a barrier to mobile internet adoption.

“This marks a significant step in ensuring all South Africans, regardless of economic background, can access reliable and affordable mobile communication,” said Thando Gabela, General Manager for Devices at MTN South Africa.

MTN, the country’s second-largest mobile operator, also sees the smartphone as a tool to transition users from outdated 2G and 3G networks to modern 4G and 5G technologies.

South Africa is gradually phasing out older mobile networks, making devices like the MTN Icon 5G vital for connectivity in underserved communities.

The move reflects MTN’s commitment to bridging the digital gap and empowering more South Africans with access to transformative technology.
