Uganda posts sharp rise in coffee exports amid bumper harvest

Uganda’s coffee export earnings and shipment volumes saw significant increases in May 2025 compared to the same period a year ago, primarily driven by a strong harvest in the country’s central and southwest regions.

Uganda, Africa’s largest coffee exporter ahead of Ethiopia, reported coffee earnings of $244 million in May 2025, a substantial 92% increase from May 2024.

Shipment volumes also rose by 44% to 793,445 60-kilogram bags in May 2025.

The surge in exports is attributed to a “good crop from the main harvest” in the central and southwest regions.

Uganda primarily cultivates the Robusta variety of coffee.

The East African nation has seen its bean shipments increase in recent months, largely due to rising production and farmers and traders releasing larger quantities to capitalize on high global prices.
