US affirms support for Kurdish deals despite Iraq’s opposition

The United States has expressed support for American energy companies’ gas deals with Iraq’s Kurdish region, despite a lawsuit filed by the Iraqi government.

The Kurdish Regional Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, announced these multi-billion dollar deals during a visit to Washington, where he met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rubio, in that meeting, praised the agreements with the US companies.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce stated that the US encourages Baghdad and Arbil to collaborate on expanding domestic gas production.

These partnerships are seen as beneficial to both American and Iraqi citizens, and crucial for Iraq’s energy independence.

The US also emphasizes the importance of a strong and resilient Kurdish region within a sovereign and prosperous federal Iraq.

Regarding the lawsuits, the US anticipates and hopes for the facilitation and flourishing of such deals.

The US stance underscores its commitment to supporting economic partnerships in the region.
