According to a report from The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Egypt is constructing a walled camp in the Sinai Peninsula to accommodate Palestinians displaced from the besieged Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian authorities are reportedly building an eight-square-mile walled enclosure on the Egyptian side of the Gaza border, as part of contingency plans amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The camp, intended to receive over 100,000 people, is seen as a response to the potential forced displacement of Palestinians into the Sinai desert.
While concerns about mass displacement grow, conflicting statements have emerged, with North Sinai Governor Mohamed Shousha denying the preparation of an isolated area for refugees.
Satellite images reviewed by media show construction activity in the area, including the building of walls along the Egypt-Gaza border. The Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, an Egyptian NGO, released a report indicating the construction’s purpose in the event of a mass exodus.
