Iran executes Mossad spy over 2022 assassination

Iran executed a man on Wednesday for espionage on behalf of Israel’s Mossad agency, accusing him of involvement in the 2022 assassination of a Revolutionary Guards colonel. The judiciary identified Mohsen Langarneshin as a “high-ranking spy” who aided Mossad’s operations inside Iran. He was hanged in the morning, according to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s news outlet.

Langarneshin was implicated in the killing of Colonel Sayyad Khodaei, who was shot dead by two motorcyclists in Tehran in May 2022. Israel reportedly informed the United States that it was responsible for the assassination, which targeted Khodaei, a member of the Quds Force—Iran’s foreign operations branch. The judiciary accused Langarneshin of purchasing a motorcycle to track Khodaei’s movements prior to the killing.

State television in Iran confirmed that Khodaei had been active in Syria, where Iran supported Bashar al-Assad’s regime during the civil war. Langarneshin’s arrest and execution are part of a broader pattern, with Iran frequently announcing the capture and punishment of alleged spies working with Israel. In December 2023, a man was executed for collaborating with Mossad, and four others were hanged the previous year for similar charges.
