Rwanda is in the early stages of discussions with the United States to accept migrants deported from the US, according to Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungireh. His remarks follow US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement last month that Washington is seeking countries to take in “some of the most despicable human beings.”
Nduhungireh emphasized that Rwanda is no stranger to such agreements, having previously agreed to take in migrants deported by the UK. However, the UK abandoned the deal after changes in government last July.
Speaking to Rwandan TV, Nduhungireh highlighted that Rwanda is committed to giving “another chance” to migrants facing challenges globally, but noted that the talks with the US are still in the early stages, with no clear outcome as of yet.
The discussions come amid President Donald Trump’s push for accelerated deportations of undocumented migrants. In February, El Salvador offered to take in deported criminals, including US citizens, in exchange for a fee.
