Sweden charges man over 2014 killing of Jordanian pilot in Syria

Swedish prosecutors have filed charges against Osama Krayem, a 32-year-old man, for war crimes and terrorism linked to the 2014 killing of Jordanian air force pilot Muath al-Kasasbeh in Syria.

Krayem, already convicted for his role in the 2015 Paris and 2016 Brussels attacks, is accused of participating in the brutal murder by the Islamic State (IS). The group captured al-Kasasbeh in December 2014, and a video surfaced showing the pilot being burned alive in a cage.

According to the indictment, Krayem, working with other IS members, killed al-Kasasbeh and recorded the execution, knowing the footage would be used as propaganda for the IS ideology.

Krayem, who was temporarily transferred from France, will stand trial in Stockholm’s district court. Under Swedish law, individuals can be prosecuted for international crimes committed abroad.

The IS-controlled territories in Iraq and Syria, where al-Kasasbeh was killed, were dismantled by 2019.
