Former U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Elon Musk’s attempt to launch a new political party, calling the idea “ridiculous.”
Speaking to reporters Sunday in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump insisted the two-party system has worked and should remain intact.
“It’s always been a two-party system,” Trump said. “Starting a third party just adds to confusion. He can have fun with it.”
The comment came a day after Musk announced the formation of the “America Party,” following an online poll on X asking users about a new political force.
Musk, once a vocal Trump ally, has become a sharp critic in recent months, slamming Trump’s policies as “insane and destructive.”
Last month, the Tesla CEO floated the idea of a new centrist party, claiming it would better represent the “80% in the middle” of American voters.
Musk later endorsed a supporter’s suggestion to name it the “America Party,” echoing the America PAC he launched last year.
The PAC, despite its name, spent $239 million supporting Trump and other Republicans during the 2024 election cycle.
Their once-cozy relationship has since curdled into a public feud, marked by policy clashes and pointed social media barbs.
Trump, riding a wave of Republican loyalty, insists there’s no room — or need — for a third party on the national stage.
Musk’s move is the latest in a series of efforts by high-profile figures to disrupt America’s entrenched political order.
But Trump’s sharp rebuke underscores the steep challenge any outsider faces in breaking the dominance of Democrats and Republicans.
