The United Arab Emirates on Thursday strongly condemned what it described as a “terrorist attack” targeting an Indian-flagged vessel off the coast of Oman, warning that the incident threatens global maritime security and regional stability.
In a statement carried by the state news agency WAM, the UAE Foreign Ministry said the attack represented “a serious threat to the safety of international navigation” and a dangerous escalation aimed at undermining stability in vital waterways.
The ministry expressed solidarity with India and reaffirmed the UAE’s support for efforts to protect the security and safety of Indian vessels and interests.
The statement also said the attack constituted a “blatant violation” of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817, which stresses freedom of navigation and rejects attacks on commercial shipping or disruptions to international maritime routes.
The UAE further warned against the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for “pressure or economic blackmail,” describing attacks on commercial shipping as acts of piracy that pose a direct threat to regional stability, global energy security and international trade.
The condemnation comes amid heightened tensions in Gulf waters and growing international concern over the security of shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important energy transit routes.
