Yemeni joint forces targeted Houthi positions in the north of the southern Al-Dhale province on Sunday morning, hours after government drones struck newly established military sites in the same area.
Local sources said the joint forces used artillery shells and Katyusha rockets to hit Houthi positions and reinforcements along the northern Al-Fakher front, near the border with Ibb province.
The strikes followed drone attacks on military positions recently established by the Houthis in southern Damt district and the Al-Oud area, following renewed clashes along nearby front lines.
Despite the fragile truce between Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthis, Al-Dhale has remained one of the country’s most active battlefronts.
Military sources said more than 23 Houthi fighters were killed last week during an unsuccessful assault on joint forces’ positions in the province.
The sources added that the Houthis had sent further reinforcements to front lines facing government forces in Ibb and Taiz provinces, amid preparations for a possible escalation in fighting.
The United Nations-brokered truce formally expired nearly four years ago, although large-scale hostilities remained relatively limited across several fronts before the latest escalation.
