The United States will send $725 million in military aid to Ukraine, including Stinger missiles, HIMARS ammunition, drones, and land mines, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday.
The move aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Russian forces before President Biden’s administration ends in January.
This package significantly increases U.S. support, surpassing typical Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) packages, which are usually $125 million to $250 million.
The Biden administration plans to provide further aid with remaining PDA funds before the transition to President-elect Trump.
As Russia intensifies its assault in eastern Ukraine, the U.S. continues to back Kyiv’s defense efforts.
Blinken reaffirmed that over 50 nations are united in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
The inclusion of land mines is controversial, but the U.S. is sending “non-persistent” mines that deactivate quickly, minimizing civilian risk.
This marks the first time in decades the U.S. has exported such weapons.
As Trump prepares to take office, his administration may shift U.S. policy on Ukraine, with plans to freeze battle lines and push for negotiations.
