AUC urges immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan

African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf voiced deep concern on Monday over the rising violence in Sudan, particularly in North Darfur.

Youssouf condemned the increasing attacks near El Fasher, including deadly assaults on displacement camps in Zamzam and Abu Shouk.

“These attacks have claimed civilian lives, including children and humanitarian workers,” he said, calling the violence a serious violation of international law.

The AUC chief extended his condolences to the victims’ families and the Sudanese people, urging an immediate end to the hostilities.

He further called for the lifting of the blockade around El Fasher, stressing the need for unhindered humanitarian access.

The African Union echoed previous calls from its Peace and Security Council, urging all parties to de-escalate the conflict.

The statement emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and fostering a peaceful environment for Sudan’s stability and future development.

The conflict between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises since it erupted on April 15, 2023.

Over 20,000 people have been killed, with 15 million displaced. US scholars estimate the death toll at approximately 130,000.
