Cholera outbreak in Sudan surpasses 15,500 cases amid conflict

Sudan’s cholera outbreak has escalated with 271 new cases reported, bringing the total to 15,577 and 506 fatalities since the epidemic began in August, according to the health ministry.

The outbreak, exacerbated by heavy rains and flooding, has now spread to 58 localities across ten states. Floodwaters have created stagnant pools, providing breeding grounds for the disease.

Kassala state recorded 82 new cases, followed by Gedaref (88), Gezira (34), White Nile (50), and Red Sea state (17). One death was reported in White Nile.

The ministry is implementing preventive measures, including home visits, community outreach, and awareness campaigns. However, healthcare services have been severely disrupted by ongoing fighting between the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hampering efforts to contain the spread and limiting access to clean water and medical facilities.

Flooding has impacted 907 areas across 11 states, with Northern state the hardest hit.
