Fears grow for civilians as Burhan’s army strikes urban areas

Fears are growing for civilians in North and West Kordofan as intensified aerial strikes and widening clashes continue to push the region deeper into crisis.

Residents report worsening insecurity as General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army drones carried out a series of heavy air strikes across multiple locations on Monday, with military sources confirming operations in areas including Umm Qirfa, Jabra al-Sheikh, Hamra al-Sheikh, Surdi, al-Khuwai and Umm Samima.

While Burhan’s army frames the operations as preventive, the scale and frequency of attacks have heightened fears of civilian harm and displacement.

El Obeid, a key urban centre in the region, is under growing pressure as authorities reinforce defensive positions around the city.

The build-up has further deepened anxiety among local communities already affected by weeks of intensified aerial activity.

Humanitarian conditions across Kordofan have deteriorated sharply over the past fortnight, with repeated strikes and shifting frontlines disrupting daily life and forcing many families to consider fleeing.

The latest escalation adds to concerns that civilians could be caught in an expanding and increasingly volatile conflict.
