Fighting escalates in Sudan’s Omdurman, leaving dozens dead

Sudanese volunteer rescuers reported that at least 120 civilians were killed in heavy shelling in the Omdurman area of the capital region on Monday.

The shelling, described as “random,” occurred in western Omdurman, across the Nile River from Khartoum.

Rescuers warned that this is an initial toll and that the actual number of casualties may be higher.

Medical facilities are struggling to cope with the influx of wounded civilians, facing severe shortages of medical supplies.

The ongoing conflict between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified in recent weeks.

This latest incident comes amid a deteriorating humanitarian situation, with widespread displacement, limited access to basic services, and a looming threat of famine affecting millions of Sudanese.

The conflict has had a devastating impact on the country’s infrastructure, including power outages and disruptions to essential services.

The United Nations has warned of a dire humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 3.2 million children under the age of five expected to face acute malnutrition this year.

The report highlights the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and to prevent further loss of life.
