A young man was shot in the head in Haj Yousif, East Nile, in an attack reportedly carried out by members of the Joint Force, an armed coalition aligned with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
The victim, identified in local reports as Idris, was shot near Al-Ban Jadeed Hospital after a dispute involving armed men carrying Kalashnikov rifles.
Witnesses said the assailants fired several rounds during the confrontation, with one report saying as many as seven shots were directed toward the victim. He was struck in the head above the eyebrow and taken to hospital for treatment.
The Joint Force, largely composed of Darfuri armed movements including factions led by Minni Minawi and Jibril Ibrahim, abandoned its neutrality in Sudan’s war and has fought alongside the SAF against the Rapid Support Forces.
Initial reports said the gunmen left the scene before police arrived. However, subsequent local reporting said East Nile police tracked down and arrested the suspects within hours.
Two of the suspects were reportedly brothers affiliated with the Joint Force, while a third was said to belong to another armed formation.
Police officials visited the scene and opened legal proceedings into the shooting. The victim’s latest medical condition was not immediately clear.
