At least five displaced people, including a newborn, were killed and three others injured in an airstrike by the Sudanese Air Force (SAF) in Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, on Saturday.
The attack targeted the Khamsa Dagayeg camp for displaced persons, adding to the already dire situation in the region.
The Darfur Displaced and Refugee Camps Coordination issued a strong condemnation of the airstrike, expressing deep concerns over the increasing frequency of aerial and artillery bombardments targeting displaced communities.
The organization highlighted the ongoing suffering endured by displaced populations in Darfur, who have faced relentless violence for more than two decades, leading to numerous casualties among vulnerable groups.
In its statement, the Coordination also drew attention to the indiscriminate shelling in the Abu Shouk camp and El Fasher in North Darfur, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians.
The SAF, the statement noted, has systematically targeted civilians through aerial bombardments and heavy weaponry since 2003, forcibly displacing thousands from their homes and perpetuating a cycle of violence without respite.
The Darfur Coordination body called on the international community and the United Nations to take immediate action by closely monitoring the situation in Darfur and Sudan as a whole. It urged the imposition of a ban on military aviation in Darfur, arguing that such a measure is essential to prevent further grave violations of human rights in the volatile region.
This latest attack underscores the urgent need for international intervention to protect vulnerable communities and bring an end to the ongoing violence in Darfur.
