The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate (SJS) has strongly condemned the recent arrest of journalist Muneer Al-Teriki, who was detained by General al-Burhan’s Sudanese General Intelligence Service (GIS) last Friday in the Nuri area of Northern state. Al-Teriki was released on Sunday after 48 hours of detention.
In a statement, the Syndicate highlighted the growing trend of journalist arrests by various security agencies across Sudan. These actions, the SJS noted, have included unwarranted searches of journalists’ mobile phones without justification or explanation.
The SJS warned security forces against using arrests as a tool to intimidate and silence journalists, emphasizing that such actions are a serious breach of freedom of expression. The Syndicate urged journalists to report any violations they experience.
Press freedom in Sudan has significantly deteriorated since the onset of the ongoing war, with over 30 journalists killed and more than 500 documented violations against the press during this period.
