Sudanese politicians slam UN envoy Lamamra for bias

Sudanese politicians have expressed frustration with Ramtane Lamamra, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, accusing him of aligning with the country’s military leadership and undermining international efforts to support democracy.

Khaled Omar Youssef, Vice President of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP), said Lamamra’s position appears to endorse amendments to Sudan’s Constitutional Document made unilaterally by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

According to Youssef, these amendments consolidate military rule and contradict efforts to restore civilian governance.

Youssef argued that Lamamra’s stance is at odds with both the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), which condemned the October 2021 coup. The AU also suspended Sudan’s membership, citing an unconstitutional change of government.

“A mediator should facilitate dialogue among all parties, not favor one faction—especially one responsible for the ongoing bloodshed,” Youssef said. He warned that Lamamra’s approach could worsen Sudan’s humanitarian and political crisis, calling for neutral mediation to achieve peace.

Several Sudanese political parties and activists have also criticized Lamamra, questioning his impartiality and urging the UN to replace him with a more neutral envoy.
