Sudanese pound falls further against Egyptian pound

The Sudanese pound fell to new lows against the Egyptian pound on Tuesday, as parallel-market and transfer-app rates continued to rise amid Sudan’s worsening liquidity crisis.

Currency market reports placed the Egyptian pound at around 79.62 Sudanese pounds for buying and between 81 and 81.51 Sudanese pounds for selling in parallel-market dealings.

Some social media posts circulated higher figures, citing rates of up to 88 Sudanese pounds per Egyptian pound, but those figures could not be independently confirmed through consistent market bulletins.

The movement comes as Sudanese families continue to rely heavily on electronic transfers from Egypt to Sudan, while cash shortages, banking disruption and fluctuating supply and demand continue to widen the gap between formal exchange rates and the rates used in informal transfer markets.

Market reports also showed the US dollar trading above 4,250 Sudanese pounds in several parallel-market listings, underscoring the continuing pressure on the Sudanese currency after more than three years of war.
