Sudan’s Umma Party suspends official for pro-SAF stance

The National Umma Party (NUP) of Sudan suspended Ismail Kater, a senior official, on Tuesday for breaking the party’s neutral stance in the conflict between the General al-Burhan’s SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Kater, who serves as assistant to the party president for constitutional and legal affairs, met with Malik Agar, deputy head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, in Port Sudan on October 10.

During this meeting, Kater reportedly voiced the NUP’s support for the SAF, according to a statement by the council.

The NUP, a significant member of the “Progress” coalition advocating for peace and an end to the conflict, has maintained a neutral position.

In its statement announcing the suspension, the NUP cited “repeated violations” by Kater of party decisions and unilateral actions that contradicted the party’s policies. Kater has been referred to the Performance Control Committee for investigation.

Internal disagreements within the NUP have intensified this year, focusing on decision-making processes and its position within the “Progress” coalition.
