TASIS forces claim control of Kulbus near Chad border

TASIS forces said Friday they had regained full control of Kulbus in West Darfur, days after the strategic border-area town was captured by forces allied with General al-Burhan’s army.

In a statement carried by pro-TASIS outlets, the forces said they had “fully secured” Kulbus after expelling remaining pockets of the Joint Force, which is allied with the SAF junta.

Military sources cited by Sudanese media said TASIS forces pursued Joint Force units toward the Chadian border after clashes in the locality.

The claim follows days of rapid shifts around Kulbus, a strategically important town near Sudan’s border with Chad. On June 29, the Joint Force announced that it had taken Kulbus after battles with the Rapid Support Forces, describing the advance as a major gain in West Darfur.

But local sources and witnesses said Thursday that RSF/TASIS reinforcements had moved in large numbers around the town, raising expectations of a ground assault within hours.

The renewed fighting has deepened fears for civilians in Kulbus and surrounding villages. The International Organization for Migration said last week that more than 6,000 people fled Kulbus and nearby villages after threats and fighting in the area, with many crossing into Chad.

Kulbus has changed hands amid a broader struggle for control of West Darfur, where the SAF-aligned Joint Force has sought to push westward while TASIS-linked forces have moved to reassert control over routes near the border.

There was no immediate independent confirmation of the latest TASIS claim, and the SAF and Joint Force had not issued a detailed response by the time of publication.
