UAE calls for immediate Sudan ceasefire, nationwide arms embargo

The United Arab Emirates has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan, warning that the escalating fighting in and around El Obeid proves there can be no military solution to the country’s war.

In a statement delivered during an urgent session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in El Obeid, the UAE urged the warring parties to agree to an immediate humanitarian truce and allow safe, unhindered aid access to all affected areas.

The UAE condemned “in the strongest terms” all violations of international law committed by both sides of the conflict across Sudan, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Abu Dhabi also called for the UN arms embargo on Sudan to be expanded nationwide, saying such a step was necessary to halt hostilities and protect civilians.

The UAE, a member of the Quad group on Sudan, welcomed the outcomes of the Berlin conference, saying it had created an opportunity for Sudanese civilian forces. It also pointed to ongoing efforts by the Quint group to advance a civilian-led political track.

The statement said the international community’s central goal should be to support an inclusive political process led by civilians, independent of both warring parties and extremist groups, and reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
