The United Nations on Sunday called on the warring factions in Sudan to ensure the safety of civilians in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, following reports of intense fighting that has displaced hundreds and severely impacted healthcare services and camps for displaced persons.
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, voiced deep concern over the escalating crisis in El Fasher, a city already housing hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs), many of whom are facing famine risks.
Zamzam camp, situated in El Fasher, has been confirmed to be experiencing famine conditions, adding to the humanitarian emergency.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reported that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that at least 250 people have been displaced in recent clashes.
While no precise figures were available on famine-affected individuals or confirmed fatalities at Zamzam camp, Dujarric stated that efforts were underway to gather more details.
This UN appeal comes as the conflict in Sudan, ongoing since April between the General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has caused a severe deterioration in the country’s humanitarian situation.
