UN warns expanding Sudan war risks pulling in neighbours

The United Nations is warning that rising tensions across the region surrounding Sudan are increasing the risk that neighbouring countries could be pulled into the conflict.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting, UN official Rosemary DiCarlo said relations between Sudan and Ethiopia have worsened in recent weeks, with both sides accusing each other of interfering in security matters.

She noted that tensions have escalated sharply since early May. At the same time, relations between Sudan and Chad remain strained following clashes earlier this year.

DiCarlo warned that Sudan’s fragile western border could become a new flashpoint, adding further uncertainty to an already deepening crisis.

She said these regional disputes could develop into a wider security threat, potentially drawing neighbouring states more directly into the conflict as fighting continues inside Sudan.

The war remains intense on several fronts, especially in Greater Kordofan and around El Obeid, where ongoing violence is driving serious humanitarian and security concerns.

DiCarlo cautioned that, set against a volatile regional backdrop, the conflict risks spreading instability beyond Sudan’s borders, much like ripples expanding across still water.

She urged the international community to step up diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and contain the fighting before it spreads further across the region.
