US officials are becoming increasingly frustrated with the Sudanese Armed Forces over its continued reluctance to approve a proposed ceasefire agreement, according to the French publication Africa Intelligence.
The report said the potential truce was among the main issues discussed during a meeting held in Cairo in June, attended by Massad Boulos, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs.
According to Africa Intelligence, Boulos’s efforts to persuade Sudan’s warring parties to reach an agreement to halt the fighting are facing growing obstacles.
The publication said Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan continues to maintain positions that have hindered progress toward a ceasefire and prevented the parties from reaching a broader understanding.
The report comes amid accusations that Burhan is seeking to consolidate his political authority and preserve his position as Sudan’s de facto leader despite mounting international pressure to end the war.
