Walf TV resumes broadcasting in Senegal after week-long outage

Senegal’s Walf TV announced its return to airwaves on Sunday, marking the end of a week-long suspension imposed by the authorities for alleged “incitement to violence.”

“We met with President Macky Sall, and he made the decision to reinstate our signal,” stated Cheikh Niass, managing director of the station, in an interview with AFP.

Niass expressed gratitude to both the Senegalese people, who “fought hard” for the station’s return, and to President Sall for his “gesture of liberation for an entire people.”

The news of Walf TV’s resumption of broadcasting was confirmed by Senegal’s Ministry of Communications through a statement released on Sunday. The details surrounding the meeting between President Sall and the station’s management, as well as the specific reasons for the signal cut, remain undisclosed.

The incident sparked discussions regarding media freedom in Senegal, with concerns raised about potential government censorship. While the full picture behind the suspension remains unclear, Walf TV’s return to air signals a potential resolution, at least for now.
