Egypt frees Al-Baraa Brigade ringleader after weeklong detention

Egyptian authorities on Sunday released Musbah Abu Zeid Talha, a ringleader in the Sudan’s Islamist-aligned Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade, after holding him for about a week in Cairo over what he described as “false and fabricated” allegations.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Abu Zeid said he was freed “with dignity, cleared of all accusations,” adding that investigations confirmed his innocence. He said he received medical treatment at an Egyptian hospital following his release.

The Al-Baraa Brigade fights alongside General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces as part of a coalition of Islamist and pro-SAF factions.

Neither Egyptian nor SAF junta officials have commented on the reasons for his arrest, though media leaks suggested Cairo had concerns about activities Abu Zeid engaged in while residing there. His detention reportedly stirred discontent within the brigade, with members threatening protests outside Egypt’s embassy in Khartoum.

The statement framed his arrest as a “routine measure any state would take to verify facts” after receiving false reports “planted by Sudan’s enemies.” It added that Egyptian authorities have allowed him to resume normal life in Cairo.
