The death of Sudanese citizen Mujahid Adel Ahmed, an employee at Khartoum Airport, has sparked widespread anger among the Sudanese community in Egypt. Mujahid, who had been held for 21 days at Al-Ahram Police Station in Giza on charges of illegally entering the country, died while awaiting deportation to Sudan.
Sources said the man, from the city of Dongola and the only son among several sisters, died from complications related to diabetes. His family said he had been in Cairo to accompany his ailing father and had repeatedly sought his release for urgent medical care. Egyptian authorities, however, refused to free him, keeping him in detention until his death.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the plight of hundreds of Sudanese detained in Egyptian prisons and police stations after fleeing the war in Sudan. Rights advocates and community leaders have condemned the conditions of detention and are urging Egypt to uphold humanitarian principles and international law in its treatment of Sudanese refugees.
